This border stronghold has survived many battles, but now peacefully dominates the picturesque market town of Alnwick, overlooking landscape designed by Capability Brown. The stern, medieval exterior belies the wonderful house within, furnished in palatial Italian Renaissance style, with paintings by Titian, Van Dyck and Canaletto, fine furniture and an exquisite collection of china. The Regimental Musem of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers is housed in the Abbot's Tower of the Castle, the Postern Tower contains an archaeological museum and the Constable's tower has exhibions on the Percy Tenantry Volunteers 1798-1814. Other attractions include the Percy state coach, the dungeon, the gun terrace and the grounds, which offer peaceful walks and suberb views over the surrounding countryside.
